July Fourth—Independence Day—traditionally marks the beginning of the summer season. Celebrating the holiday has been a festive tradition for generations of Americans.

This annual observance brings to mind how many generations of people have trusted The Hospital of Central Connecticut with their health. Our tradition of caring has a strong history that continues to evolve today, as we offer a range of new or expanded initiatives to keep you and your family healthy. You will read about several of these in this issue of HealthEyou.

A new era in cancer care dawned this spring with the opening of the Hartford HealthCare Cancer Institute at The Hospital of Central Connecticut. This new center makes the nation’s most advanced cancer care available close to home and in an environment that promotes healing and peace of mind. We celebrated with grand opening activities during the week of June 15. I hope you were able to stop by.

HOCC continues to offer its highly regarded bariatric surgery program. The program’s offices are conveniently located on South Road in Farmington and on Pine Street in Bristol. All preoperative care, diagnostic testing and education, as well as postoperative follow-up and long-term support, are—again—provided where you want them: close to home.

Our joint replacement program continues to expand. In addition to expert knee, hip and shoulder replacement, HOCC’s orthopedic team now performs partial knee replacement on an outpatient basis. And later this month we will introduce MAKOplasty® surgical technique for patients with hip and knee pain. We are also placing a stronger emphasis on helping patients go directly home after discharge, where they can comfortably continue their recovery, complete with at-home physical therapy.

Other topics you’ll read about include the New Britain campus’ cardiology department renovations, which will provide state-of-the-art technology and patient-focused care, and a school outreach program that seeks to prevent young people from smoking.
